On the Senate floor, Senator Kelley continued lobbying for a formal war declaration against the Shohan Assembly. Support for the measure is on an upswing in the chamber with an increasingly vocal group of other senators showing their support for the declaration, but this group, while loud, has not yet reached a sufficient majority to actually pass the act. The main voice of opposition to the declaration, Senator Karsalia, while praising the fleet for its current, diligent preparations in the sector of his constituents, took to the podium to urge the rest of the Senate not to leap into an irrevocable action against the Assembly, “Our attempts at contact with the Shohan have so far been met with silence, but I feel that a declaration of war would be ill-advised at this time. We do not know their intent, and declaring war would likely provoke them into more acts of aggression.”
A rally was held today in London, in Trafalgar Square, in support of the Fleet’s current actions to maintain our defenses in the sectors currently under alleged Shohan threat. Many flags were waved, and many voices were heard, all declaring that the Sphere was behind its service men and women, and speakers at the event claimed that the Shohan had best not provoke the Fleet further, although many critics noted it is still unclear if Fleet weaponry is capable of damaging the Shohan, given the Chiron's experiences. Trafalgar Station itself, has still offered no official comment on the situation, but sent its heartfelt appreciation to the participants in the rally.
In sadder news tonight, the people of Terra have lost one of their greatest treasures this week. Famed recording artist and late-night holovision host Archibald Meter died last night at the age of 158. Many fans considered him like a treasured member of their own families, and feel the loss on an almost personal level. But, like the line in one of his most famous songs, Life is But a Dream, he reminds us that while “musicians may lose their lives, life never loses its music.”

Outrage is filling the Senate floor this week, as the events on Prospero continue to come to light. Senator Kelley has begun to openly state the links between the attacks at Zhujiangjin, Prospero, We Made It! and even Minerva, and is pushing to have a re-vote on the Sphere budget for this year, particularly as it pertains to the funding of the Fleet. In light of recent events, he feels we need to revisit the proposed need for military funding this cycle, and quote, “...give our boys everything they need to kick those grey bastards right the Hell back to wherever they come from.” He further added that it is a continued insult to humanity, and the Sphere as a whole, that Ambassador Davies continues to be absent from his offices on Unity.
Volunteer rates for the Terran Sphere Navy have reached reported new record highs. Even the Thral, whose usual bouts of claustrophobia lead to issues serving on naval vessels, have been enlisting in the TSN at noticeably increased rates. The events in Sector 4163 are becoming a rallying cry around the Core worlds, Commodore Guo’s name being mentioned in more than one instance fueling a spreading sense of nationalism, though Fleet Command at Trafalgar has been notably quiet on the phenomenon. We can safely assume that they are planning a response to the Shohan aggression, and are endeavoring to bring this misunderstanding to a swift and decisive end.
In lighter news, Reverend Samantha Turay, High Cantor of the Church of Humanity Ascendant, will be making a visit to the Sol system, making several stops on Terra, and here on Huoxing! She has said that the events in the Reaches are indeed unfortunate, and that those affected have the full support of the Church, and will be acknowledged in the scheduled concordances during her visits here. His Holiness, Pope Francis III, has expressed similar sentiments on behalf of the Vatican, and will be organizing prayer sessions for the victims.

Tonight’s Top Story: A full military restriction has been placed on all civilian travel in Sector 4163. Pilots in the private sector are urged to avoid travel in or near the region to avoid both danger and suspicion. In a likely related story, the colony world of Prospero has been attacked, reports indicate that it is another act of Shohan aggression. Ambassador Davies and staff are still gone from Unity, and the TSN High Command at Trafalgar has given no official stance on these events. The two events, it seems, are directly related, and Fourth Fleet has been fully mobilized. A new recruiting drive is anticipated throughout the Sphere as unrest grows in the Reaches.
Reaction to these reports in the Senate has been mixed. Senator Kelley has joined the increasing number of voices pointing to this as an act of war by the Shohan, starting with Minerva and has gone so far as to cosponsor an official declaration of War against the Shohan Assembly. The motion was met with fierce opposition from Senator Karsalia and others who been holding out hope for a diplomatic resolution to the crisis. While many agree that this is vastly out of character with what we know of the normally reclusive species, events continue to point in this unpleasant direction. Despite his requests to resume attempts at diplomacy, Senator Karsalia joined the majority in sponsoring the emergency spending requested by the Fleet.
On the diplomatic front, the Chiron embassy has voiced the Star League’s sympathy for residents of that sector, and a few voices were allegedly agitating for a joint Sphere and Star League response to these acts. Reports on the Chiron embassy’s official stance, are, of course, conflicting.
Now joining us live is Senator Karsalia, fresh off the rather tumultuous debate on the Senate floor earlier today. Senator, thank you for coming on the Show tonight.
[Senator Karsalia] Thank you for having me, Jane. Always a pleasure to be on the ‘cast.
[Jane Li] Senator, in light of the Shohan’s continued attacks on Terran Sphere worlds, and their so far absolute refusal to answer any of our attempts at communication, a number of your colleagues have characterized your continued attempts to establish a diplomatic mission to the Shohan as “Quixotic” at best. Would you care to answer your critics?
[Senator Karsalia] Well, Jane, the fact of the matter is quite simple: With no diplomatic contact, we have no idea what their intentions are. We still do not even know what happened on Minerva that may have provoked the Shohan. My staff has been in regular contact with executives from BioGenesis in an attempt to determine the facts on the ground of Minerva, as it were. Our previous encounters with the Shohan had all been peaceful, and quite cordial. Without knowledge of what precipitated these incidents, we cannot have a cohesive plan of action for how to react.
[Jane Li] Do you believe there is a realistic chance at peace? Even after three, and possibly four colonies have been occupied by the Shohan?
[Senator Karsalia] I do, yes. We would do well to remember that there was hostile contact between the Shohan Assembly and the Chiron Imperial Star League, as well. While the Chiron refer to these incidents in … less than flattering terms... they did manage a peaceful end to the misunderstanding. This is why my colleagues and I feel a diplomatic mission must be sent.
[Jane Li] Yet, you still voted for the increased Naval budget.
[Senator Karsalia] Yes, Jane. Diplomacy is still the path I would prefer, but it would be foolish to deny that there have been … hostile contacts. Increased preparedness in the Fleet seems only prudent at this juncture. Preparedness, mind, not provocation. With the technological edge enjoyed by the Shohan, it would be unwise to act in a manner that would be construed as openly hostile.
[Jane Li] Senator, some of your critics have made comments in light of your recent vote expressing what they feel is a fundamental inconsistency in your position. Do you feel that you’re being inconsistent in working for this peace initiative while voting for one of the large increases in the TSN budget in recent history? Does simply being prepared really require nearly tripling the TSN budget?
[Senator Karsalia] In the face of external hostility, we must be prepared to safeguard the freedom of our citizens. Zhujiangin and Prospero have, unfortunately, proven that we were not yet ready. The TSN receives a budget during peacetime, as well, after all. As to the accusations of inconsistency in my position, I can only refer to the actions of several of my... esteemed colleagues, who not even a month ago were dismissing these attacks altogether as random acts of piracy or simple malfunctioning equipment, yet now feel it necessary to increase the budget and push for a war declaration. The magnitude of the budget increase was... surprising, I must say, and the numbers did seem to get inflated in the hands of certain Senators who handled the bill after myself and the Naval Affairs committee. Perhaps, after waking up to the seriousness of our current crisis, they were filled with... an abundance of caution.
[Jane Li] If I could take a step back to your earlier remarks, you claim you’ve been in contact with representatives from Biogenesis, yet you’ve also voiced support for those demanding a full investigation of Biogenesis’ operations on Minerva. Do you feel that they’re being less than forthcoming with you and your staff?
[Senator Karsalia] It is unfortunate, but my staff and I cannot discount the possibility. Given the severity of the present situation with the Shohan, it might cause a great deal of embarrassment to the company, should something be discovered. Given the lack of contact with Minerva, however, we do not know for sure. This, again, is one of the many reasons I believe a diplomatic mission must be sent.
[Jane Li] Senator, I see that we’re out of time. Once again, thank you for coming on the Show tonight.
[End Senator Karsalia Interview]

We’ll continue to keep an eye on the unfurling situation and bring you updates they happen.
Continuing with our program this evening: in other news, it turns out that the defending “Race to the Gap” champion, Zebulon Clarkson, will not be participating in this year’s race, after all. Rumours are circulating that this is due to the alleged tariff increases on gene mods, some of which may be sported by members of his crew. These rumours are unsubstantiated, and likely to remain so, as talk of the tariff issue has all but ceased on the Senate floor.

Ladies and gentlemen, Race fans everywhere! The course is set, and all checkpoints confirmed for the Fifteenth Annual “Race to the Gap”. Entrants are expected from all over the Sphere, including defending Race champion, Zebulon Clarkson. We will, of course, be broadcasting the festivities as they occur. This year is expected to be just as exciting as last year’s Race, let’s hope for another close finish, shall we? From Unity, however, debate over the implications of the events in Sector 4163 continues to overshadow other discussions. Motions regarding tariff adjustments on Abascian gene modifications have been tabled for the moment, and rumours are beginning to circulate about an increase in Naval activity in the region. Fleet representatives have said that such motions are merely precautionary at this time, and assure the Senate that all steps are being taken to prevent any further incidents. Details are unconfirmed at this time, but word is spreading that Fourth Fleet has confirmed intelligence regarding the situation on Zhujiangjin. Trafalgar representatives have said such news will be released at the appropriate time. In related news, however, Captain Billingsley of the Bonaventure, loaned from the Alpha Centauri Star Navy, has been awarded a meritorious service citation for his ship’s role in the recent actions against the Kanhoji Crew pirates. Senator Kelley and his camp applaud the Captain’s brave exploits, and are hopeful that the removal of this pirate menace will lead to future good fortunes in the Sector, and even a resolution as to what happened with the ansible relays on Minerva. Senator Karsalia and his supporters remain skeptical that the pirates had anything to do with the Minerva situation, citing that the pirates were found and disbanded over Prospero, which is, “nearly the other end of the sector”, and not a “neighboring system”, as had been characterized by Senator Kelley. Later this week, Nea Alexandria University is set to reveal its latest polls on the public’s stance on the crisis, but initial leaks indicate a major shake up in the public’s opinion, stay tuned for our continuing coverage and how this might impact the debate on Unity...

Senate Debates Zhujiangjin

… Welcome back. Continuing our top story tonight: rumours continue to circulate about what did or did not happen at Zhujiangjin three weeks ago. The loss of Commodore Guo was a blow to the hearts of those who served with him, and tears were shed at his memorial on the Paul Bunyan, Admiral Laurentson’s flagship. The ceremony is scheduled for airing to the Sphere as a whole tonight, immediately following this broadcast.
Senator Karsalia continued his remarks on the Senate floor regarding the incident at Zhujiangjin being far more than the “border skirmish” Senator Kelley is trying to call it. This is the first incident with the Shohan to have confirmed fatalities, which is inconsistent with everything known about them so far. Ambassador Davies’ continued absence has only added fuel to the fires of this ongoing debate. More voices are also adding to the calls for an investigation into Biogenesis’s terraforming operation on Minerva. In a statement today, the Terraforming conglomerate’s spokesperson reiterated that they have no more idea than anyone else why Terran-Shohan relations failed so dramatically on the planet.
In other news this week, we’re happy to report that injuries were kept to a minimum at the Huaxiong Biological preserve. Reports confirm that one of the Triceratops specimens managed to break the gates of its enclosure, the employees at the preserve showed their training in flying colours, managing to corral the animal, and herd it back into its enclosure before the evening feeding. New gating material is already being ordered and fabricating, with a stronger, more interlocking mechanism. The design of the safety trenches adjoining the gates and fences will also be addressed. Reportedly, Subhash Malik, famed designer and chief architect of Sopara City on Artemis III, might even be consulted on the new enclosure designs.
