Tonight’s top story: in what has been described as a failed scouting attempt, a Shohan Destroyer was shot down over New Haven. Vessels from Third Fleet were already patrolling the system when the destroyer jumped in, and in what has been characterized as a brief skirmish, the crewmen managed to disable the enemy vessel before it could withdraw from the system. We’ve since been told that the wreckage of the enemy vessel is being studied for anything it can tell us about our foes. This represents the fourth Destroyer loss the Shohan have suffered in recent weeks. Pilots of the Local Defense forces continue to make gains using the so called “turn and burn” maneuver. The tactic, brought to light by Commodore Shetley himself, involves the use of a ship’s drive plasma to burn through a Shohan Ship’s force fields. The maneuver is not without its dangers though: three ships of the New Haven Defense force were lost in the skirmish.

In more somber news, the colony of Saneesh has gone dark. Reports indicate that the bulk of the civilian population had already been evacuated by Second Fleet, but those elements came under fire from the Shohan invaders during the last stages of the evacuation. We ask that our viewers keep the citizens of this latest colonial victim in their concordances and prayers this evening.

On the Senate Floor today, Senator Kelley put forth a motion that November 20th on the Sphere Standard Calendar become a day of remembrance, commemorating the sacrifices made by Fourth Fleet, and the fate of Artemis III. The motion is expected to pass with an overwhelming majority, though Senator Karsalia was not available for comment on the matter.

What can only be described as... an Exodus appears to be happening throughout the Sphere. Another Shohan attack has occurred at the colony of He Fei, and a panic has resulted, causing multitudes of colonists and islanders to flock away from the invasion zone. Some are even going so far as to attempt to leave the protection of the Sphere entirely. The Senate is urging people to remain calm, and not to act hastily in these trying times. Squadrons from Second and Third fleets are already working tirelessly in attempts to anticipate where the Shohan may attack next, and, if necessary, evacuate the colonies that are deemed at risk. Senator Kelley’s office offered the following comments, “We face a grave threat from a terrible enemy, I admit. But it is in times of great adversity that we humans band together, and show our greatness! Show our strength! It is when we stand together that we will be triumphant in this great war! We’ve shown this to the Kriak more than once, now we must show the Shohan!”

In a shocking development, broadcasts have recently started surfacing through back channels that claim to originate from Artemis III. The identity of the alleged broadcaster is that of a local tabloid artist, who had specialized in the fields of programming and technological development. These broadcasts make reference to a resistance force on Artemis III, fighting back against the occupying Shohan, but specifics are not given, citing that tangle for this “black link” is scarce. Fleet Intelligence at Trafalgar remains skeptical, believing this could be some sort of false-intelligence plan being perpetrated by the Shohan. Senator Karsalia however, has vouched for the identity of the voice of these broadcasts, citing that he does not believe the Shohan would be able to simulate this man’s personal idiosyncrasies, as he put it. Some of the content of these transmissions is too coarse for air, however.

6 Months Later...

Today’s update on the War: it’s been almost six months since the Battle of Artemis III, and the Shohan have yet to make any comparably large attacks. Sources at Trafalgar are speculating that the large-scale fleet action they displayed at Artemis might have, in fact, been a large portion of their active ships. Commodore Shetley has been quite busy briefing the command staff at Trafalgar, as well as the localized fleet commands now stationed at Zanzibar and nearby worlds, and as such, has been regrettably unavailable for interview.

Local recruiting offices are reporting a significant increase in volunteers since the Artemis incident, propelled by outrage over the attacks, but the Fleet still has significant ground to cover in it’s efforts to rebuild. Many assets from both the Joint Earth Security Forces and the Alpha Centauri Space Navy are being called directly into service in the TSN as a whole to fill the gaps left by the Massacre of Artemis III. This has been known to happen during the Kriak Crusades, and is likely to continue until we can somehow find peace with the Shohan Assembly. Many voices in the Senate are already starting to doubt that such a peace is even possible after Artemis. They point out that while several Kriak crusades have been massive in scale, none of them have managed to compromise or occupy worlds nearly as populated. The status of the people living there, now under occupation, remains unknown. Senator Karsalia urges people to remember that, until Minerva, the Shohan were known by most as an almost wholly non-violent people, citing the lack of casualties in the “Great Humiliation” of the Chiron. Such thoughts are likely giving him some measure of hope for the health and safety of his constituents.

Some religious fervor has been seen spreading throughout the Core. Some have gone so far as to ask if the Shohan are God’s method of judging our decadence. High Cantor Samantha Turay has assured the followers of the Church of Humanity Ascendant that such questions, while understandable in such trying times, are not to be given merit. “To consider this invasion to be a judgment from the Divine would be an abdication of reason, and against the enlightened path upon which we all wish to walk.”

Founding Day

Good evening, ladies and gentlemen... Citizens of the Sphere. In light of the events of just over a month ago, the traditional greeting of “Happy Founding Day” seems a vain and hollow gesture, but, nonetheless, we wish you all the best of fortunes in this upcoming new year. Of course we cannot overlook the misfortunes of recent months, and are embroiled in a massive conflict, but we cannot, and will not lose hope. The losses over Artemis were... staggering, to say the least, not to mention that such a major population centre is now under enemy occupation. The cause of the aggression remains unknown. What is known, however, is that Captain... rather, Commodore Shetley now, and the crews of the five ships he managed to get out of that failed engagement are providing invaluable intelligence for the rest of the TSN. His medical recovery is now complete, his promotion and commendations for heroism affirmed, and he is currently working directly with HQ at Trafalgar to find new, more effective ways of combating our enemy.

On the diplomatic front, officially, our allies in the Chiron Imperial Star League are not joining the war against the Shohan. However, many of them still remember the “Great Humiliation”, and several of their mercenary groups have taken contracts at greatly lowered rates from the TSN, specifically to fight the Shohan. Similarly many Chiron citizens, some former military, some aspiring to join the military, have migrated to the Sphere in order to join our Navy, for much the same purpose. So, while officially they are not at war, our allies are finding ways to support us in our time of need. Even the usually peaceful Teuthid are sending recruits in noticeable numbers, despite their world being nominally independent of the Sphere. The Hadiians and Mendicants, however, have had very little apparent interest in the affair. While their disinterest is all but expected, we can take comfort in knowing that the Kriak are remaining placid along the border zones with the Sphere.

A Special Report...

This is Jane Lee preempting our interview with the Reverend Samantha Turay for a special report. Initial reports from Artemis III have begun filtering in from various sources. There have been many rumors regarding the battle at Artemis III however, facts remain scarce at this time. Officially, Fleet HQ at Trafalgar has confirmed the following: Fourth Fleet met the Shohan at Artemis III. A battle ensued. Details are sketchy, and Fleet HQ has not released casualty reports as of yet, but all indicators are that Fourth Fleet suffered defeat at the hands of the Shohan. Once again, our reports are that the Fourth Fleet has been defeated at Artemis III, and we urge our audience to remain calm at this time.

In reaction to this news, the Senate had an emergency meeting on Unity, and a formal state of war now exists between the Terran Sphere and the Shohan Assembly. The motion for this declaration passed unanimously, Senator Karsalia himself offered the following from the Senate floor: “Gentlefolk of the Senate and the Terran Sphere, I wish to express my thanks for the many messages of sympathy and support I have received since we learned the fate of my homeworld. I am deeply touched by your support  and have taken strength from it the past few days. But, I fear I must turn to the matter of the hour. While I urged diplomacy before, in hopes of avoiding the terrible costs war inflicts and to amicably sort out a potential misunderstanding with a once friendly race, it is clear now that diplomacy has failed. The fate of the Fourth Fleet and my own homeworld has left no doubt that this aggression by the Shohan Assembly cannot be dissuaded by peaceful means. We, the Terran Sphere, will now do what we must to end this aggression. We. Will. Fight. And, in taking up this burden of war, hope to one day see again our loved ones and worlds who have been sheared from us by the Shohan. Thank You.”

Once again, for those just now joining us, no details have yet been released by Fleet HQ, but reports indicate that the Fourth Fleet has been defeated over Artemis III, and that world, the Jewel of the Reaches, is now under Shohan occupation.

Artemis III, unlike many other worlds taken by the Shohan, had numerous ansible relays. While the Shohan are once again prioritizing their destruction, there are sporadic and unconfirmed reports still being sent from planetside relays. Many of these reports get cut-off mid-stream. At the time of this report, indications are that the Shohan are sending ground troops into the city of Sopara and there is gunfire in various blocks as local forces resist. Currently unconfirmed is the state of the world’s government. There are reports that they have been evacuated to the sparsely populated and heavily forested continent of Bow but there have been no official relays from Artemis III officials confirming this.
This reporter is not too proud to admit that this is... hard to report.

Across the Terran Sphere many impromptu vigils are being held for those at the battle. The High Cantor has already rescheduled much of her itinerary for her visit to the system, with fewer publicity appearances and a great deal more concordances. His Holiness will be offering a mass at the Vatican this evening, as well, for the crew of Fourth Fleet and the inhabitants of Artemis III.

We will return momentarily with our continuing coverage of the battle.
